NEWCASTLE area Councillor Willie Clarke has requested a meeting with the Forestry Service to discuss the possibility of leasing a section of Tipperary Wood in Newcastle.
Councillor Clarke explained: “I have met with community representatives and around 30 young BMX enthusiasts. The young people have formed themselves into a constituted group and are keen to lease some ground in the wooded area close to Kinghill Avenue, Newcastle, which is in the ownership of Forest Service.
“This area is used by many in the local community and connects the Tullybrannigan area of Newcastle with the rest of the town through a walking route via Islands Park.
“There is a lot of potential for community use of this area. Improvements could include an upgrade of the walking route and access difficulties could be addressed also.
“The local PSNI neighbourhood team have also met myself and representatives from the BMX group and are very supportive of this initiative, I have written to Forest Service requesting a meeting to see if it is possible to progress this positive initiative.”
