Downpatrick put on at 5-star show at Bellsbridge on Saturday and progressed to the quarterfinal of the Border Cup, where they will face xa0Bangor Firsts.

Downpatrick didn’t hang around and came out of the blocks flying with efforts from Chrissy Mullan and Mark Curran, but both efforts where well saved by the Dromara keeper Paul Rice.

With Downpatrick well settled they took the lead on 13 minutes when the outstanding Conor McKenna spread a pass out to Barry Treacy on the right wing and his pinpoint cross was met flush on the head from top striker Stephen Galbraith. Galbraith really should have added to his tally on 20 minutes when put through by strike partner Andrew Telford but his effort squeezed wide.

Winger Treacy and central midfielder Matthew McGarrity were both guilty of wasting excellent opportunities to add to the Downpatrick’s advantage, but both missed the target. Galbraith did get his 2nd from the penalty spot after Telford was brought crashing to the ground when through on goal.

Half Time – Dromara Village 0 – Downpatrick 2

In the second half, Downpatrick started exactly where they left of with maximum pressure on the Dromara defence, 10 minutes into the half Telford got on the score sheet when he rose to meet another expert delivery from the magic right foot of Barry Treacy. With an hour gone Dromara began to come into the match and really should have got themselves a goal but any danger was dealt with by keeper Conan Russell.

On the xa070th minute mark Downpatrick put the game beyond Dromara when Andrew Telford broke free to smash the ball into the top right corner. The only sour note on the day was when John Glennon got his marching orders for a remark made to the referee but credit to Downpatrick they kept pushing and Stephen Galbraith got his hat-trick on 85 minutes with a lovely left foot finish when put through by veteran Neil Young.
