Rogers Says Mournes and South Down Excluded From Giro D’Italia Route

South Down MLA Seán Rogers xa0(SDLP) has spoken out following the publication of the Giro D ’Italia Route.

Mr Rogers said: xa0“The Giro D ‘Italia cycle race is a very prestigious one which will take place here in the North of Ireland next May.

“I had hoped that the Mournes and the wider South Down would have been included in the route. We have, in my opinion, the most scenic parts of the North which have keen sporting enthusiasts throughout.xa0 We only have to look at the success of the local running and triathlon clubs to see how interested in sport and such events we are.dn_screen

“In recent months we have established excellent mountain bike trails which are infamous through Ireland and Europe and we want to build on our reputation.

“This Giro D ‘Italia race is one of the most famous in the world and this is the first time that it has taken place outside of mainland Europe and I had of hoped that South Down could have enjoyed the benefits of such a huge event.

“This is a preliminary route at this stage and I will be making representations that the Mournes, St Patrick’s Country and South Down could be included.”
