The project will see the commissioning of a sculpture, production of a written history of the docks and the development of an educational programme in conjunction with local schools.

Minister Nelson McCausland said:xa0“During the 1930’s and 1940’s, Newry Port played a major role in the commercial and domestic development of the town providing employment for many families in the area. This project, which has been developed in association with the local communities, aims to recognise its contribution and impact through the provision of a sculpture, a history book and an education programme linking in with local schools.

“The project will see the strengthening of inter-generational relationships as many of those who worked in the docks reside within the Neighbourhood Renewal area and are in an excellent position to share their personal memories with future generations.”

The Minister paid tribute to all those involved in the project. He said:xa0“This project was developed through partnership, led by DSD and Newry and Mourne District Council, working in conjunction with the Newry Maritime Association and Newry Neighbourhood Partnership. It compliments Phase 2 of the Newry Public Realm Scheme and will help to further develop the sense of community pride that exists in the area.”
