DOWN County Museum is inviting people to attend a series of free historical talks which are based around the ‘decade of centenaries’, the period from 1900 to the 1920’s in Ireland.
Between 1910 and 1922, County Down was engulfed by the political turmoil which prevailed in Ireland and affected by the world wide impact of the Great War.
The talks range from an examination of the labour movement in the early part of the twentieth century to how the partition of Ireland affected Northern Nationalists and Southern Unionists.xa0 The talks which are free of charge and which last about an hour promise to provide valuable insights into this crucial period in our history and are sure to be of interest to all communities in County Down. They will be held in both Down County Museum, Downpatrick and North Down Museum in Bangor as part of Down County Museum’s PEACE III funded community history project.
The PEACE III project looks at how local, national and world events shaped political and community identity in this period and how this continues to effect society today. The Museum’s project will be contributing to addressing sectarianism and racism by promoting shared and integrated communities through community animation programmes. The project is funded until December 2013.
