AS the world of banking continues to respond to the circumstances of the recession, the news of the closures of the Castlewellan and Newcastle branches came as a shock to the local communities earlier this year.

The Danske Bank has offered a lease of the premises in Castlewellan to the community and voluntary sector as an option as the property is set to go on the market.[/caption]However, in a recent statement from the bank, a spokesperson said in respect to the Castlewellan premises:xa0“It is our intention to sell the former Castlewellan branch. xa0The premises will be placed for sale on the open market in the coming months. xa0However, we would consider all possibilities, including potential commercial lease of the premises.”
Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke who has lobbied Danske Bank since the closure announcement said:xa0″Following a meeting in May at the Down Civic Forum Council offices with Danske Bank officials, I have now held subsequent discussions with them xa0regarding the future of the building in Lower Square, Castlewellan.
“Danske Bank have now confirmed to me that the former Castlewellan branch will go on the open market within the next four to six weeks, and also they have now confirmed thatxa0Danske Bank will consider a business plan or proposal from any organisation, either community or voluntary, who have plans for the building in Lower Square with a view to a leasing arrangement subject to conditions.”
“I would like to see this historic building in Castlewellan being retained in the community and not sold to a commercial interest. I xa0would urge any organisation with plans or proposals to submit them to Osborne King who are the agents for Danske Bank, or alternatively contact me and I will be happy to give the necessary details of the officials whom I have discussed with.”
“There is a very short window of opportunity for a business plan or proposal to be submitted which could secure the former Danske Bank in Lower Square Castlewellan for community use.”
