Congratulations go to Joe Fitzpatrick from xa0Saul Street in Downpatrickxa0who is Down District Council’s Recycler of the Month and he wins a £50 prize courtesy of DOE’s Rethink Waste initiative.
He was congratulated by Assistant Education Officer Lucinda White for having a flawless blue bin with no contamination. Joe said that the money will come in handy to go towards home improvements.

Joe Fitzpatrick from Downpatrick pictured with Lucinda White, Down District Council Education Officer.[/caption]Lucinda added: “When searching for the winner we are looking for a bin that contains cardboard (although heavy cardboard must be ripped up) paper (except for envelopes, shredded paper and tissues) plastic bottles (no plastic other than bottles), cans (including food and aerosols) and tinfoil.
“Please remember you can now recycle tetra packs which are the waxed juice or soup beverage cartons. Tetra pack cartons are 100% recyclable and are made from high quality wood fibres which are strong and flexible. When recycled they can be made into new products such as roof tiles or building panels.”
xa0“People in the district are increasingly aware of which items belong in the blue recycling bins, but there are still some unwanted items which the Council cannot recycle that slip through the net. These include takeaway food boxes as they contain dirt and grease, paper tissue, plastic bags, polystyrene and food wrappers. Bins containing the incorrect items will not be collected.”
