Power NI Clean up Kilkeel Beach

Volunteers from Power NI, Northern Ireland’s leading energy supplier, took part in a recent beach clean at Kilkeel, County Down.

The Credit and Collections team volunteered to assist environmental charity TIDY Northern Ireland in their Marine Litter programme which aims to monitor the level of beach litter at 14 beaches across Northern Ireland.

The clean-up took place on Friday 5 July 2013 and armed with gloves, bags and litter pickers the 17 volunteers cleaned the beach from top to bottom filling several trailers full of litter. The data collected will be reported back to the Department of the Environment and will help provide an overview of the problem of marine litter in Northern Ireland.

The task proved to be both challenging and rewarding and the Power NI staff were delighted to play their part in this worthwhile initiative.

Commenting on the company’s involvement with the programme, Malachy McVeigh, Senior Credit Manager, Power NI said: “When I raised this with staff about taking part in this project I was absolutely delighted with the enthusiasm and response to take part.  We were very fortunate to pick one of the first warm days of the summer and staff were genuinely surprised at the quantity of waste washed up on the beach.  Staff were delighted to make even this small contribution to improving the environment and helping to restore the beach to a litter free state.”

Nicola Murray from TIDY NI remarked: “We were delighted when Power NI approached us to get involved in our Marine Litter programme. They worked tirelessly and showed real enthusiasm during the beach clean. It is fantastic to see they are so focused on helping the environment in any which way they can.”
