What's in a Name Asks Culture Minister?

dn_screenWhatโ€™s in a name? Everything is in a name โ€“ Nรญ Chuilรญn Cad รฉ atรก san ainm? Tรก gach rud san ainm โ€“ Nรญ Chuilรญn

Culture Minister Carรกl Nรญ Chuilรญn is hosting a special event this Thursdayxa027 June 2013xa0in the MAC celebrating surnames and placenames in Irish. Tรก Carรกl Nรญ Chuilรญn, Aire Cultรบir, ag รณstรกil รณcรกid speisialta Dรฉardaoinxa027 Meitheamh 2013xa0sa MAC a cheiliรบrann sloinnte agus logainmneacha na Gaeilge.

Speaking before the event, the Minister said:xa0โ€œThere is nothing more personal than our own names, for many it says who we are and where we come from. Irish placenames, surnames and personal names are well known around the world.

โ€œNรญl a dhath nรญos pearsanta nรก รกr gcuid ainmneacha fรฉin. Ag cuid mhรณr againn, cuireann sรฉ in iรบl cรฉ muid fรฉin agus cรก has dรบinn. Tรก eolas timpeall na cruinne ar logainmneacha, sloinnte agus ainmneacha pearsanta na hร‰ireann.

โ€œMany of the places in which we live also carry the ancient names given to them by the people who first lived there. They can tell of the history of a place or its landscape. For example Poleglass – in Irish, An Poll Glas – means the green hole or hollow. Ballysillan, Baile na Saileรกn, is the townland of the willowgroves.

โ€œI gcuid mhรณr de na hรกiteanna ina bhfuilimid inรกr gcรณnaรญ, maireann na hainmneacha รกrsa a thug na chรฉad chรณnaitheoirรญ orthu. Mar shampla, An Poll Glas an chรฉad ainm a bhรญ arxa0Poleglassxa0agus Baile na Saileรกn arBallysillan.

โ€œTownlands are a unique feature of the Irish landscape. They existed long before our parishes and counties, and it is therefore important this history and knowledge are retained as new developments and progress change our landscapes forever.

โ€œIs gnรฉ ar leith de thรญrdhreach na hร‰ireann iad na bailte fearainn. Bhรญ siad ann i bhfad roimh รกr gcuid parรณistรญ agus contaetha agus, mar sin de, is tรกbhachtach go gcaomhnaรญtear an stair agus an t-eolas seo anois go bhfuil forbairtรญ รบra agus dul chun cinn ag athrรบ an tรญrdhreacha go deo.

โ€œIt is brilliant to see the growing interest across society in learning the Irish Language. Since I launched the Lรญofa initiative in September 2011 we have far exceed the initial target of 1,000 people committing to becoming fluent in Irish by 2015. We have now exceed 4,000 signatories.

โ€œIs iontach go bhfuil nรญos mรณ daoine nรก riamh as gach cuid den tsochaรญ ar suim leo an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim. ร“ sheol mรฉ tionscnamhxa0Lรญofaxa0i Meรกn Fรณmhair 2011 shรกraigh muid gan strรณ an chรฉad sprioc a bhรญ againn go mbeadh 1,000 duine tiomanta don Ghaeilge a bheith ar a dtoil acu faoi 2015. Tรก breis agus 4,000 duine clรกraithe againn anois.

โ€œEvents such as this will help celebrate the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of this island, something we all share and that should be embraced by all.

โ€œIs cuidiรบ iad imeachtaรญ den chineรกl seo oidhreacht shaibhir chultรบrtha agus teanga an oileรกin seo a cheiliรบradh, รณir is oidhreacht รญ ar fรฉidir linn a roinnt ar a chรฉile agus glacadh lรฉi go fonnmhar.
