Castlewellan GAC Weekly Notes

monthly Bingo will now be held this Sunday 19xa0May at 3.00pm in the Club. The reason for the change is to avoid it coinciding with Feis Sunday which will be held in Castlewellan on Sunday 26 May 2013. Congratulations to Aoife Keown on her Ulster Colleges Camogie All-Star Award recently. This is a fantastic recognition of her ability and indeed the work she has put into her sport. It is also an indication of all the work done by her coaches within the club. Well done Aoife.dn_screen The Under-16 Boys Footballers recorded a good victory away to local rivals Kilcoo on Saturday afternoon. In a game was played in some terrible conditions The Town lads dominated the game from the start and had Kilcoo penned in for the duration if the first half. However, the lads didn’t make the most of their dominance and went in at the break leading 0-5 to no score. After the restart The Town scored a couple of quick points and then seemed to take their foot off the gas allowing Kilcoo back into the game to draw level at 1-4 to 0-7 with 15 minutes to go. At this point The Town rallied and again took control of the game firing in 4 goals and a point to win the game 1-5 to 4-8. Best for the town at the back was Keelan Burns, Sean Conlon and James McAleenan. Lee Ward and Sean O’Boyle bossed midfield while up front it was Chris King, Donagh Cairns and Gareth McKibben. On Saturday our Under-10 footballer’sxa0took part in axa0blitz hosted by Dromara GAC. The boys competed well in all matched against the host club Dromara, Kilclief and Kilcoo with great performances from all the boys โ€“ well done to everyone. The panel was Tiernรกn Connolly, Alex McAlinden, Miceal McVeigh, Ryan Milligan, Nathan Owens, Mathew McCabe, CJ Baine, Liam Oโ€™Neill, Ruairi King, Daniel Rice, Antoish Ozga, Ciaran Lowey, Cormac McKibben, Michael Magorrian & Joe Oโ€™Boyle. Football training continues on Tuesday evening in the Bann Road club pitches for P4 โ€“ P7 from 6.30 โ€“ 7.30pm. The Senior footballers have continued their good start to the season with two good victories over the past week. The weather certainly is not warming the cockles of our hearts so instead for now the senior footballers are fulfilling that role. On Thursday of last week they travelled up to An Riocht on what was as wet a night as there has been. The rain managed to do its worst either side of the game. The game was nip and tuck early on even with The Town racing into a three point lead within the first ten minutes. The An Riocht tagged on a couple of points before Cahal Crilly found the net half way through the first half. The host replied immediately with a goal of their own. The contest was hotting up into a real ding dong battle. The turning point was The Townโ€™s second goal again from Cahal Crilly. Before half-time the Town had stretched the lead to six points. The second half was all The Town who piled on the pressure in attack after attack comfortably running out seventeen point winners. This result left The Town in good stead for Sundayโ€™s game against Ballyholland at the Bann Road. This game was quite a different affair which one spectator described as a war of attrition. The Town led at half time by seven points to no score. Was it a wind advantage? Was it good a defence? The first score of the second half was a goal from the visitors which tested the second theory. To The Townโ€™s credit wind advantage did not work for the visitors in the second half with the lads defending very well. The Town ran out winners by seven points in what was a tough game. Last week the Senior Footballers qualified for the Feis Sevens Final. Not to be outdone, the Minor Footballers have matched them by qualifying for the final also. On Sunday past at Ballykinlar they worked hard against local opposition to book their Feis Sunday place. Having defeated Drumaness in their first game they met Bryansford in the next round. Despite being a goal down at half-time they rallied to win the game by a goal to qualify for the East Down Group Final against Kilcoo. Despite the lads leading well at half time, Kilcoo came back at them but in the end they held on by three points to win their Feis Sunday place. Well done to the Minors. It is a long time since the Seniors and Minors qualified for the finals in the same year (1989 to be precise). A double was brought home then. Hopefully we can repeat this success at The Feis.
