Detectives in Downpatrick have arrested a number of men following two burglaries in the Church Street and the Stream Street areas of the town. Three of those arrested aged 23, 24,and 36 were arrested following reports of suspicious activity in the Church Street area of Downpatrick around 4pm on Tuesday 5 February. On investigation by police it was discovered that the burglars had broken into the Old Community College building. The thieves made off and were arrested a short distance away. Police attended the scene of the burglary at Stream Court shortly after 2:30am on Wednesday 6 February. The 19-year old male burglar had forced a rear patio door and stolen car keys. He was disturbed by the homeowner having tried to start the vehicle. He made off and was arrested a short time later. DI Little has praised both the efforts of police officers and the swift actions of members of the public. She said: “These men were arrested within a short time of burglaries being reported. I would thank the members of the public for their swift reaction and timely reporting that has proved invaluable in furthering our lines of enquiries.” Councillor Eamonn Mac Con Midhe said: “I would call on residents and business owners in the Stream Street area of the town to still be on extra alert due to these recent burglaries.
“A local shop was broken into and a quantity of cigarettes along with money from charity boxes were stolen after thieves entered through the roof of the premises.
“These actions are completely despicable and it is the last thing people need given the current climate. I would call on anyone with information regarding the break-ins or anyone who observes any suspicious activity in the area to contact the PSNI immediately.” South Down Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has also called on the residents and business people of the Stream Street area to take extra measures in securing their premises,“I would encourage those in the area to take extra caution in the evenings to ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked and that any potential weaknesses which could be exploited by criminals are remedied.”
