McCarthy Welcomes Consultation on Apartment Law

STRANGFORD Alliance MLA Kieran McCarthy has welcomed the launch of a Law Commission consultation seeking a review of Apartment Law.

A long-time campaigner on the issue, the Strangford MLA previously brought a bill to the Northern Ireland Assembly highlighting the concerns of apartment owners, before passing his work onto the Law Commission.

The consultation will close on January 25 and is aiming to assess the most appropriate way to address problems currently experienced by people living in apartments and other development with open spaces.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I wholeheartedly welcome news that the Law Commission is to begin a consultation with the aim of reviewing Apartment Law. This has been an important issue for me for many years and I know there will be apartment owners everywhere relieved at the news

“This process is long overdue.xa0 In 2010 I brought a bill to the Assembly seeking reform of current Apartment Law.xa0 This Bill went to its second reading before changing procedures meant it had to be handed over to the Law Commission.xa0

“I would urge as many apartment dwellers as possible to take part in the consultation process.xa0 Only through engagement will the Law Commission be able to assess the problems facing those living in apartments.

“The process is aiming to outline the most practical ways to achieve the required results and the Law Commission has also indicated it will consider flexible solutions.xa0 Once completed the findings will come before the Assembly, where we can enact real change for all affected.”
