NEWCASTLE Sinn Fein Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed proposed repairs at the Islands Park in Newcastle.
The works have been incorporated into the Council Building and Estates maintenance schedule.
Councillor Clarke said: “I wish to commend Down District Council staff for there response in authorising the work undertaken.
“I raised a number of issues that required rectifying in the park with Council staff at a site meeting recently. The repairs that are to be carried out include, tarmac repairs to a number of pathways where pooling is occurring. This problem arises after periods of heavy rainfall which makes it difficult for users of the park to enjoy a walk.
“Other repairs include the lifting and relaying of paving around the tennis pavilion area which has over time become unsightly and is a risk to pedestrians. It also includes drainage and repairs to the asphalt in the car park in the upgrade.”
In a related matter Councllor Clarke added: “I am pleased that Council have committed to painting the bridges in the Islands Park by March 2013,
“I have made numerous representations to the Council to paint the two bridges, which have become an eye sore caused by lack of maintenance. This is a park used by many locals and visitors alike and the infrastructure and appearance has to be fit for purpose.“
