SERC Host Visit from South Down MLA Chris Hazzard

ON the invitation of SERC Principal Ken Webb, Chris Hazzard, MLA for South Downxa0constituency,xa0recently visited South Eastern Regional College’s Lisburn Campus.

During the tour Mr Hazzard met students and spent time talking to them about their course and their plans for the future. Later, he took a tour of the college’s state-of- the-art facilities where he met many more students involved with their lessons.

Commenting on the visit, Mrxa0Hazzard said: “It was great to visit SERC and meet the staff and students. I met with a number of inspiring students and wish them well in their endeavours. It was a privilege to be shown around the College and talk to the students.”

Mr Hazzard recently praised SERC’s new initiative which gives students the opportunity to earn back their fees on a range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) courses.xa0 SERC launched the STEM initiative in May 2012 to help those who wanted to study a STEM course, however the cost held them back.xa0 The initiative works by allowing the students to study and successfully complete their course; following this they receive a full rebate for their fees.

The initiative has proven a success and enrolments in STEM courses have risen by 185% since the start of the promotion. Mr Hazzard praised SERC saying: ‘The importance of science cannot be understated. Colleges that prioritise science and technology are helping us to create a workforce that can fill skills gaps in society helping to drive our economy forward in these difficult times.”
