COMBER now has its first dedicated visitor service, with the installation of a tourist information point at the town’s leisure centre.
The use by Ards Borough Council of its leisure centre as a tourism hub means visitors have access seven days a week to the range of guides to the area, from historical walking tours and the Andrews-Titanic trail to activities, local attractions, where to stay and where to eat.
The new visitor facility follows the success of recent Titanic-related activity in Comber over the past year, according to Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee, Alderman Robert Gibson:
“The attractions which Comber holds for visitors have been very much to the fore in the past year, as more and more people visit the town to learn more about the Andrews family and its links to the Titanic. Having a dedicated information point in Comber Leisure Centre means that visitors have much easier access to information not just about Comber, but about the opportunities to explore the whole of the Ards Borough”.
Councillor Deborah Girvan who proposed the creation of the information point, as well as an insertion on the welcome signs to the town, highlighting it as the birthplace of Thomas Andrews, designer of the Titanic, said: “I am delighted that the Council has acted upon both of my proposals to install an information point in Comber Leisure Centre and amend the signage at all the main entrances to the town proclaiming Comber’s connection to the Titanic.
“With more tourists visiting the town, especially since the Comber Greenway was opened, it is important that we project a positive and welcoming image. The two new features will help to promote the expanding tourist attractions in Comber and surrounding area which in turn will benefit the local economy.”
