Down Alzheimer's Society Group Faces Busy September

A Down Alzheimer’s Society branch covering Downpatrick, Newcastle and Ballynahinch is now championing the cause of people living with dementia and those who care for them. One of it’s key tasks said Charlotte Moore, Down and Lisburn Dementia Support Worker, “is to launch our current services and events available. “Our next meeting of the Ballynahinch Carers Support and Information Group, run by the Alzheimer’s Society, will take place on Monday 19th September at 7pm in the Market House Ballynahinch. Our speaker will be Consultant Psychologist Brenda Carney-Gallagher discussing ‘What is Dementia?’ “The Alzheimer’s Society information session for friends, family and carers of those living with dementia will take place in the Newcastle Centre from 2pm – 3.30pm Wednesday 14^th September. Dr Deirdre Shields, Consultant in Psychiatry of Old Age will be discussing how to cope with difficult behaviours. “Also, there will be an meeting for carers of people living with dementia will take place on Wednesday 21^st September from 11am -12.30pm in Daisie’s Café in the Donwpatrick Centre, Downpatrick. “The Alzheimer’s Society will be holding a Tea Dance on the 20^th September from 2pm – 4pm in the Millbrook Lodge Hotel in Ballynahinch. Everybody is most welcome to hear what the society has achieved lately and our plans for the future. This brief presentation will be followed by light refreshments and dancing with music provided by Jim Lyons.” Alzheimers is a growing disability in the elderly and is is understood one in three will die with a form of dementia. There are 16,000 people with dementia in Northern Ireland. This figure will increase to over 47,000 by the middle of this century.
