Castlewellan GAC Notes * Under 10 Hurling – Castlewellan fielded teams at Banbridge Leisure Centre, De La Salle Downpatrick and The Eddie Irvine Centre in Bangor. This was the last week of games and the boys competed really well. In Banbridge the team had one win, one draw and one defeat scoring ten goals and competing really well. There was a similar result in Downpatrick with some great scores and play while in Bangor a youngish outfit lost two, drew one and finished in style with a big win scoring six goals against St Enda’s. Well done to all the young hurlers who have trained hard and represented the club in each indoor blitz. Training continues on Thursday night. A big thank you to all parents and club coaches for their support over the last seven weeks. * Castlewellan began their Ulster League Division 4 campaign against newly promoted Glencar – Manorhamilton – on Saturday at the Bann Road with a convincing 7-8 to 1-2 win against the Leitrim outfit. Paul McCabe started in an unfamiliar full-forward role but turned in a fine performance scoring 4-02. Martin óg Keown, captain Ray Cunningham and Fionnbarr Lennon performed well. Well done also to Cathal óg Keown (0-2), Rory Burns, Brian McCartan (1-0) and Michael Keown all of whom made their senior debuts. Striking and first touch was a little rusty a times. [caption id="attachment_20752" align="alignleft" width="400" caption="Castlewellan Senior Hurling Squad for opening Ulster League game against Manorhamilton – Glencar"][/caption] All would agree that Glencar-Manorhamilton were not at their strongest but nevertheless it was good to get off to a winning start. Next match is on Saturday away to Rasharkin. It was good to see the three wise men of Hurling in the Town at the match on Saturday. All are in the various stages of trying to grow beards. One will need a blow torch to remove his, one will need an ordinary razor and the last one –well a face cloth would do itStephen! *The GAA’s Medical Scientific & Welfare Committee announced in December past an update to its position paper on Cardiac screening. The GAA have advised that the most effective way to identify risk is for players over the age of 14 to undergo cardiac screening. To this end we plan to hold a Cardiac Screening Event in the Club this month for our young players of all ages both male and female. Health Hearts, Healthy Lives is a mobile heart screening service, set up by former Armagh GAA players John and Tony McEntee, providing cardiac screening to help prevent sudden deaths in young people who may have Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. They will come to the Club and undertake this screening at £35 per person. It only applies to 14 year olds plus. The full cost of £35 must be met by the individual but we would hope that parents/guardians/players would feel this is worthwhile. The Club asks all Coaches to raise and encourage this with their players over 14 through to Adult Teams and let Miceal Crilly know the level of interest. Miceal will get questionnaires which must be completed prior to the clinic and these can then be returned with £35. He will coordinate a date and booking of the clinic. * Commiserations to St Malachy’s High School Castlewellan surrendered their Ulster title when they lost out in the Market Cup semi final to old rivals St Ciarans Ballygawley. They were defeated on a score line of 3 – 11 to 2 – 07. The dream of 4 Ulster Titles in a row was not to be. Our players on the panel were Aidan Dornan, Rory Burns, Matthew Stratton, Aidan Doherty, Conal Corrigan, Conal Crilly, Martin Brannigan and Stephen Connolly. * The Castlewellan GAC runners are continuing their runs on Tuesday and Thursday night leaving the Club at 7.00pm. It is encouraging the numbers attending at present. It is particularly pleasing the number of our female members participating. We would encourage this trend to continue. * There will be Yoga in the Club on Monday Nights at 7.30pm with Linda for all girls both playing Camogie and Football. The turnouts to date have been encouraging. Again we would ask all our young female members to participate in this. * Under-12 girls football training will commence on Saturday 26 March in St Malachy’s Primary School. We ask all girls eligible to ensure they are prepared for outdoor and indoor training depending on the weather. * All Club members – Have you got clothes that have become so last season! Do you still have those shoes under the bed which you don’t wear anymore? What about that handbag you bought and only used it a few times? Over the next week there will be a leaflet drop to Club members asking you to donate those clean clothes, shoes, handbags and delph you do not use anymore. This is a way for you to help your club raise much needed funds that are required to run your teams. There will be more details of this in the coming weeks. * The Down Race Day will take place on Sunday 27 March in Downpatrick. Tickets for this event can be obtained from Rory McCabe at a cost at £20.00 each. All members wishing to attend the event are encouraged to obtain their ticket from the Club. There will be a draw on the Race Day for 40 pairs of match tickets for the first round of the Ulster Senior Championship against old rivals Armagh. * All coaches and mentors of our underage teams are reminded once again that they must complete the Access NI forms. The forms can be obtained from the Club. Please pass those forms to Miceal Crilly as soon as possible. * Camogie for our Under-8, Under-10 and Under-12 age group will continue in St Malachy’s Primary School on Tuesdays from 6.30pm. * The indoor hurling continues on Thursday nights in St Malachy’s Primary School. Coaching will start at 6.15 pm for the Under-8 age group and the coaching for the Under-10 and Under-12 Groups will commence at 7.15pm. New players are welcome to come along and begin Hurling in a fun indoor environment. * Coaching continue in St Malachy’s High School on Monday nights from 6.30pm. * The tote numbers for the 27/02/11 were 2, 3, 21 & 25. There were no winners – Jackpot next week £5650.]]>
