Councillor Clarke Welcomes Castlewellan Road Drains Fix

The Castlewellan Road in Newcastle is to get a drainage investigation and repairs says Cllr Willie Clarke

Sinn Féin Mournes Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed plans to carry out an extensive investigation and improvement programme to address drainage problems along the Castlewellan Road in Newcastle, following his continued lobbying on behalf of residents affected by poor drainage infrastructure.

Cllr Clarke said: “I have been lobbying for a considerable time for improvements to the drainage infrastructure along the Castlewellan Road, where a number of residents have experienced problems due to inadequate drainage.

“I welcome the confirmation that a similar exercise to the one recently completed on the A24 between Clough and Ballynahinch is planned for the Newcastle to Castlewellan Road.

Cllr Willie Clarke has campaigned for improvements to Castlewllan Road drainage and welcomes the Department’s commitment to fix the flooding.

“During the summer, an extensive investigation was carried out on the A24, uncovering a number of gullies that had become buried over the years. These were brought back into operation, while all gullies were cleaned and the associated pipework jetted.

“The investigation also identified damaged pipes, which were repaired, alongside the installation of new drainage at several locations. These works have helped resolve many of the drainage issues on that route.

“I am encouraged that a similar approach is planned for the Castlewellan Road, as a thorough investigation will help identify underlying problems and determine the necessary remedial works.

“I understand that the timing will depend on other works in the area, as the route may be required as a diversion during a road closure. This could restrict the extent of the investigation and works that can be undertaken until those restrictions are lifted.

“I will continue to press for these improvements and keep residents informed as the plans progress. People who have been affected by persistent drainage problems deserve to see the necessary work carried out to address these issues and improve the situation for the future.”
