Delamont Event Recognises District Carers’ Invaluable Contribution
Carers from across the district enjoyed a well-deserved day of relaxation, creativity and innovation at Delamont Country Park on 29th September, thanks to a collaborative event organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob District Electoral Area (DEA) Forums, in partnership with the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust’s Carers’ Support Department.
The event was designed to recognise the invaluable contribution of unpaid carers and provide them with an opportunity to take a break from their caring responsibilities, while enjoying a range of engaging activities in a supportive and welcoming environment.
The morning commenced with a creative Mandala art workshop, delivered by local artist Lise Curran, where participants had the opportunity to relax, express themselves and learn new artistic techniques.
Following the workshop, carers stepped into the world of virtual reality aboard the DigiBus, with participants exploring a variety of immersive health and wellbeing experiences, as well as virtual tourism scenarios that allowed them to visit different locations, all from the comfort of the bus.
The Delamont event highlighted the importance of supporting carers and ensuring they have access to opportunities that promote wellbeing, social connection and respite.
In the afternoon, residents from the Down Residential Project visited the country park to experience the DigiBus and its range of virtual reality activities, further enhancing the inclusive and community-focused nature of the event.
Slieve Croob DEA Chairperson, Councillor Alan Lewis and Rowallane DEA Chairperson, Councillor Jonny Jackson, who attended the event, said carers play an essential role within communities, often dedicating countless hours to supporting loved ones.
They added: “This event was an opportunity to recognise their commitment, provide a meaningful break from their caring responsibilities and introduce them to new experiences that support health and wellbeing.
“We were delighted to work in partnership with the South Eastern Trust’s Carers’ Support Department and all those involved in making the day such a success.”
