Ballynahinch Choir holds coffee morning in memory of member who passed away due to cancer
In early 2026, a choir member of Ballynahinch Harmony passed away following a diagnosis of cancer, and her friends in the choir decided to raise funds for Friends of the Cancer Centre in her memory.
Ken Tait, choir member said: “I’ve been a member of Hinch harmony Community Choir for a couple of years now, following on from being with Voices of Lecale, which stopped following the sad passing of our wonderful leader, Laura Plummer.
“Carol Young, sadly passed to cancer at the start of this year, and we felt it would be a tribute to her memory that her choir arranged an event to raise funds for the Friends of The Cancer Centre in her name.
“On Saturday 26th September, we held a coffee morning in Ballynahinch Community Centre, where choir members together prepared an impressive spread of home baking and hot drinks, and invited the public to join us.
“On the day of the coffee morning, we raised in excess of £800 for the Friends of the Cancer Centre.
“Carol’s family were present, and we were very appreciative of our support for the charity.”
“We sang a selection of songs, This is Home, Sweet Dreams, Something Inside so Strong, and Carol’s favourite, True Colours.
“Hinch Harmony formed in late 2024, headed by Kirsty Orr, our talented musician and choir leader (see: kirstyorrmusic.com).
“The choir is described as mixed, with no auditions, and welcoming to everyone who wants to give it a try, whether a total beginner or an established singer, there’s no need to read music, everything is taught by ear, and the feeling is of being part of a fun-packed family.
“We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7.30-9pm, in Ballynahinch Community Centre, and, since beginning, to date, have raised in excess of £4000 for a number of charities, also singing in schools and retirement homes, as well as at civic events.
“Our plans continue to evolve, with new opportunities and events coming up throughout the year.”
