SDLP team raises local community concerns with PSNI
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath and Downpatrick Councillors Aurla King and Councillor Conor Galbraith have met with the local PSNI Inspector and neighbourhood policing Sergeants to discuss a wide range of issues affecting communities across the area.
The meeting covered concerns around illegal parking, drug dealing, anti-social behaviour, recent incidents of arson, and the on-going problems caused by scramblers and e-scooters.
Colin McGrath MLA said: “Keeping people safe in their own community has to be a key priority. We welcomed the opportunity to sit down with local police officers and have an open and constructive discussion about the issues that residents continue to raise with us.
“We spoke about the importance of tackling drug dealing, addressing antisocial behaviour and ensuring that those responsible for recent acts of arson are pursued. We also raised the growing frustration around scramblers and e-scooters.
“People should be able to enjoy places like Dunleath Park without feeling intimidated or having to dodge vehicles being used dangerously.
Cllr King added: “While the meeting was constructive, we also challenged the police on behalf of our community. Residents want to see a visible police presence, more foot patrols and reassurance that these issues are being actively tackled.
“Feeling safe in your own neighbourhood should never be too much to ask.
Cllr Galbraith added: “The SDLP team will continue to stand up for local people and work with the PSNI where appropriate, while also holding them to account where improvements are needed.
“Our communities deserve policing that is visible, responsive and focused on the issues that matter most to local residents.”
Colin McGrath MLA concluded: “There were a number of positive actions identified during the meeting and, as the local MLA and a member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, together with local councillors, the SDLP team will continue to raise these issues to ensure our area receives the policing resources and attention it deserves.”
