New Exhibitions at Ards Arts Centre: In Search of Light by Karen Hamilton and Surface Matters by Claire French
Ards Arts Centre welcomes two new exhibitions this month: In Search of Light by Karen Hamilton and Surface Matters by Claire French. Both solo exhibitions will open on Thursday 27th August and run until Saturday 19th September.
In Search of Light, a new exhibition by visual artist Karen Hamilton, explores the intangible phenomenon of light, translating the force that enables us to see and engage with our environment into tangible woven textiles.
Bringing together work developed throughout the artist’s under-graduate degree and new experimental weaving, Hamilton examines the characteristics of light through both artistic approaches to colour and form and scientific enquiry.
The collection celebrates weaving heritage through techniques and materials, particularly linen and cotton associated with Ards and North Down. Affirming the contemporary relevance of weaving at the intersection of art, craft and science, this immersive installation invites viewers to observe light closely and experience its potential.
On Thursday 17th September at Ards Arts Centre, Karen Hamilton will give an artist talk, discussing the exhibition and her artist journey.
In Surface Matters Claire French explores how both form and surface of a vessel can embody a personal narrative and energy, enabling exploration of human memory and experience.
While the surface encompasses artistic expression, it also acts as a canvas extending the narrative within the form.
Eroded, scraped surfaces will metaphorically reflect how time wears down body and mind, transforming alluring, smooth textures into dry, skins that are not what they seem.Â
Though visually appealing, surfaces can evoke memory through touch. Using burnishing, scraping and dry glazing, Claire has created tactile works inviting connection, questioning what lies beneath, and encouraging personal reflection through organic vessels of varying forms.
Both exhibitions will open on Thursday 27 August and run until Saturday 19 September. Admission is free.
