Andrew McMurray MLA welcomes DAERA Minister’s commitment to protect Mourne Mountains
Alliance South Down MLA Andrew McMurray was speaking after the Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Andrew Muir, met with the Forever Mournes steering group on Thursday 30th July, welcoming the Minister’s commitment to protecting the treasured landscape.
The Forever Mournes Steering Group represents a number of organisations interested in the protection and enhancement of the Mournes in Northern Ireland.
Mr McMurray said: “The Mournes are a widely treasured landscape for so many people, ranging from the farmers and communities that make their living in a place which is their home, right the way through to the many visitors who come for recreational purposes.
Across all these sectors, the Mournes are a vital source of employment and business for the local community.

“However, over the years, the area has faced growing challenges, leading to increased pressure on local resources and the natural environment.
“Issues such as parking congestion, path erosion, biodiversity loss, littering, and rural arson have become significant concerns, and it’s important we act now to address these issues and protect the mountains and their surrounding areas.
“I welcome Minister Muir’s visit today with the Forever Mournes group where we discussed a range of priorities. The Steering Group raised a need for improved infrastructure to manage visitor pressures, including parking provision and a sustainable path network.
“The publication of the Strategic Framework and Action Plan on wildfires was welcomed and we are increasingly seeing a realisation among the general public that these fires are not natural or helpful in relation to upland management and environmental renewal.
“After years of previous DAERA Ministers overlooking the significance of the Mournes, Minister Muir has changed approach and taken action to address the many challenges.
“Through the establishment of the Strategic Group for the Mournes and the launch of a new Strategic Framework aimed at managing and reducing wildfires, we are finally seeing important progress to securing the sustainability of the Mournes.
“Everyone has a role to play in protecting this special landscape. I thank the Minister for showing vital leadership in prioritising this important issue, and his ongoing efforts to enhance the region’s sustainability.”
