£2.9M Public Realm Scheme to Commence on Church Street, Downpatrick

Work is set to begin this summer on the Church Street Public Realm Scheme, marking another major milestone in the ongoing regeneration of Downpatrick.

Funded by the Department for Communities and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, the scheme will transform one of the town’s key streets into a more attractive, accessible and welcoming space for residents, businesses and visitors.

The total value of the scheme is approximately £2.9 million, comprising £2.5 million from the Department for Communities and the remaining funding from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Construction is scheduled to commence in early August 2026, following the completion of network upgrade works currently being undertaken by NIE and BT Openreach.

The improvements will include high-quality granite paving and natural stone kerbs, upgraded pedestrian crossings with tactile paving, replacement traffic signals, enhanced street lighting, new street furniture, planters and additional tree planting, creating a safer, greener and more vibrant town centre.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glynn Hanna said, “It is fantastic to see this significant Public Realm scheme moving forward and works commencing on Church Street.

“This investment will deliver a much-needed upgrade to this important part of Downpatrick, enhancing the streetscape and creating a more welcoming and attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors.  

“The scheme represents another positive step in the continued regeneration of Downpatrick and I look forward to seeing the transformation of Church Street as the works progress.”

John McQuillan Contracts has been appointed to deliver the scheme, with construction expected to take approximately 12 months.

Works will take place along Church Street from Pillar Well Lane to the Scotch Street junction, and along De Courcy Place/Lower English Street from its junction with Church Street to the frontage of Denvir’s Hotel.

Every effort will be made to keep Downpatrick open for business throughout the construction period. Access to homes, businesses and community facilities will be maintained wherever possible and, where temporary restrictions are necessary, advance notice will be provided.

ohn McQuillan Contracts will work closely with affected property owners and occupiers to accommodate specific access requirements.

To allow the works to be carried out safely while maintaining two-way traffic and pedestrian access, a small number of on-street parking spaces will be temporarily suspended and some bus stops relocated during certain phases of the project.

These arrangements have been carefully planned to minimise disruption and keep the project progressing safely and efficiently.

Keeping residents, businesses and visitors informed will be a key priority throughout the project.
