McGrath says the Department of Infrastructure needs to improve this surface of the A7 urgently as it has deteriorated following works by utility companies
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath and Downpatrick Councillor Conor Galbraith have called for urgent resurfacing of the Belfast Road (A7) in Downpatrick after meeting with Roads officials to discuss the deteriorating condition of the route.
The representatives were advised that resurfacing of the first section of the Belfast Road out of Downpatrick is currently the second highest priority scheme across the Newry Mourne and Down Division, raising hopes that work could begin before the end of the summer.
Colin McGrath MLA said: “We have been pressing for action on the Belfast Road because its condition is simply not good enough. This is one of the main roads into Downpatrick, yet the road surface has deteriorated to a point where it requires urgent resurfacing.
“We have met with Roads officials and welcome the indication that this scheme is now one of the highest priorities in the division. We now want to see that priority translated into action as quickly as possible.
Councillor Galbraith added “It is unfair that residents in Downpatrick have to put up with an A-class road that has been allowed to deteriorate to this standard. Too much of the damage has been caused by utility companies repeatedly digging up the road and failing to restore it to a proper condition afterwards. That cannot continue.
“The Department for Infrastructure must take a much firmer approach with utility companies. It is simply unacceptable that public money has to be spent repairing roads that have been left in poor condition after works have been carried out.
“Taxpayers should not be left footing the bill when roads are not reinstated to the standard they should be.
Mr McGrath concluded “We will continue to press for this resurfacing scheme to be delivered as soon as possible. It will improve safety and comfort for motorists, provide a much better experience for people travelling in and out of Downpatrick, and ensure that one of the main gateways into our town is presented in the condition that local people deserve.”
