Police advise public on how to keep their properties safe

A police spokesperson said: “Following a number of burglaries in our district, The Police Service of Northern Ireland would like to offer advice to homeowners on how to keep their properties safe.

“Whilst we will continue to conduct proactive patrols, respond to reports of suspicious activity and deliver crime prevention, everyone can play a part in taking proper precautions with their home and property.

“We understand that a burglary can be financially costly and emotionally devastating to victims and we want every member of our community to feel safe and protected whilst also being enabled and encouraged to feel in control of their own security and safety. 

“By taking just a few simple measures, you can dramatically reduce the chances of it happening to you.

“You can keep your property safe by following some simple advice:

• Locking up your property – including windows – if you’re heading out. Try to make your house look as occupied as possible.  

• Check all windows and doors for any weaknesses.

• Even if you are at home, lock your front door and windows from the inside. Some front doors are often left unlocked when people are in and thieves know this.

• Keep valuables out of view in case a burglar looks through your front door or window. This applies to your car too – don’t leave anything in view that will attract thieves.

• Hide all keys out of sight and away from your front door and windows. To avoid keyless car theft, keep keys in a Faraday Bag or box to prevent your signal being intercepted and your vehicle stolen.

• Ensure you have an active and correctly installed burglar alarm to deter thieves. Placing cameras – or doorbell cameras – by entry points is also a good idea, as this records any unusual movement outside. If you don’t have an alarm or cameras, consider installing them.

• Don’t leave garden tools outside, as they could be used to facilitate a burglary, whether it be your house or car.

• Get to know your neighbours and keep an eye out for each other, particularly if you’re going away for short period – they can be your eyes and ears.

• Report all suspicious activity by contacting police on 101.
