Greenans Products Ltd., headed up by Managing Director Niall Greenan, the Castlewellan-based company behind the innovative Smart Bunker™, has been honoured with the PolyNext Award 2025 for Excellence in Plastic Re-cycling & Sustainability, Innovation in Plastic Reuse and Up-cycling.

The innovative Smart Bunker has solved a 100-year old problem from heating your home to de-icing your driveway and to feeding your animals.

Niall Greenan’s presentation in Dubai highlighted his capacity for innovation driven by his personal empathy and determination to succeed.

Niall admits to having pursued a number of awards in the past 15 years. This has helped focus his attention shaping his product. Currently he makes Smark Bunkers in three colours: black,blue and yellow.

Around 2010, Niall’s Smart Bunker design which is a masterpiece of manufacturing excellence in re-cycled plastics, caught the public imagination recognising its flexible uses.

Niall Greenan said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this PolyNext global award. The SmartBunker® design was inspired by my own mother’s struggle with arthritis.

“It is a spring-loaded storage container with a side lever and it has transformed storage and dispensing practices while promoting convenience, accessibility, efficiency, and waste reduction.

“We received the Innovation in Plastic Re-use and Upcycling award at the PolyNext awards held in Dubai for our out-of-the box, storage solution.

“‘From a practical point-of-view, the Smart Bunker can be filled at chest height. The person delivering the coal, pellets, animal feedstuffs etc can then take away the bag for recycling thus reducing waste.

“Our Smart Bunkers are manufactured in in Northern Ireland by Greenans Products Ltd., and our patented user-friendly, pull-arm system is useful for for storing coal, wood pellets, salt, grit, animal feed, and other dry materials.

“It represents practical innovation that has gained recognition on BBC’s Dragons’ Den and approval from industry leaders and featuring on Dragons’ Den with backing from HETAS, Balcas Energy, and CAFRE.

The award was presented at the prestigious PolyNext Awards 2025, organised by Next Business Media and held in Dubai in early October, celebrating global leaders driving sustainability and circular innovation in plastics.

It acknowledges Greenans Products Ltd.’s pioneering efforts in sustainable design, recycled material use, and ergonomic functionality.

The Smart Bunker™ is a perfect example of a simple idea that has a global impact.

Niall Greenan added: “It is made from high-quality modular design also extends the product lifespan, reduces landfill waste, and supports responsible resource management.

By manufacturing locally in Northern Ireland, the company further minimises its carbon footprint.
