Hazzard to intervene in Donard Park Anti-Social Behaviour
Young drivers have been revving up and burning up the rubber and it will be coming to an end as local residents have met with Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard.
Following a meeting with concerned residents, South Down MP Chris Hazzard has committed to tackling anti-social behaviour in the Donard Park area.
Residents highlighted ongoing issues with late-night car meets, resulting in excess noise, and anti-social behaviour in the overflow car park. A petition calling for action has been signed by over 700 local residents.
Hazzard will now convene a multi-agency meeting to find a solution.
The meeting will include representatives from the PSNI, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, and the Department for Infrastructure. The Donald Park residents group, and the car meet organisers will also be invited to the meeting.
Newcastle Councillor Willie Clarke also met local residents. He said: “We have been contacted by many residents who are at their wits’ end with the noise and disruption.
“This multi-agency approach is exactly what’s needed to move beyond the current impasse and find a solution that works for everyone in the community.
“We’re committed to supporting residents and ensuring they can enjoy peace and quiet in their homes.”
“The residents of Donard Park have shown incredible determination and patience in trying to resolve this issue,” said Chris Hazzard. “Their lives are being significantly impacted by this, and it’s clear that a new approach is needed.
“By bringing all relevant parties together, including the residents and the car meet organisers themselves, we can create a space for a meaningful dialogue and, hopefully, agree on a concrete plan of action.
“I am confident that by working together, we can find a solution that respects the right of residents to live in peace.”
