Community Spirit Transforms Downpatrick House into a Home
A MACS shared tenancy property in Downpatrick, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, has been given a new lease of life thanks to the dedication of Philip Boyd, MACS staff and the incredible support of the local community.ย
Led by Philip Boyd, SOS Project Manager at Kier Group, the refurbishment project brought together local businesses, volunteers, young people, and even the townโs traffic warden, proving that when a community pulls together, amazing things can be achieved.
Over evenings, weekends, and holidays, people donated their time, skills, and energy to complete a ยฃ20,000 transformation on a shoestring budget.ย

The work included:ย
- Full repainting throughout the propertyย
- New carpets and flooringย
- Plastering and repair worksย
- Fresh furnishings to make the space welcoming and comfortableย
The result is a safe, modern, and permanent home for young tenants who were previously living in unsuitable conditions.
โThis project was about more than providing shelter,โย said Philip.ย โIt was about creating a stable, permanent home that can open the door to a brighter future.
“A new home leads to a new bank account, which leads to a full-time job, and thatโs exactly what has happened here in Downpatrick. Absolutely fantastic.โ
The project has already made a life-changing difference to one young tenant, who now has a secure home, financial stability, and employment.
Philip added:ย โMost people say no, but you must keep trying, and remember, thatโs ok. The Downpatrick community showed whatโs possible when people listen, see the needs around them, and step up to the challenge.

“Everyone involved, regardless of skill level, played their part. No complaints, no invoices, just commitment.โย
MACS staff joined forces with local supporters, with contributions from tradespeople, young adults, and community members who wanted to make a difference.
Even the local traffic warden played their part by ensuring vehicles werenโt ticketed during the works, keeping the project moving without additional costs.ย
โThis was an absolute privilege,โย said Philip.ย โWithout the support of the Downpatrick community, this simply would not have been possible. The project shows the power of compassion, collaboration, and resilience, and the real change that can be achieved, even with no budget. Keep building those bridges.โ
MACS CEO Kate Martin said,ย “This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when communities and organisations come together with a shared purpose. It wasnโt just about refurbishing a property, it was about restoring dignity, creating stability, and showing young people that they matter.
“I want to sincerely thank Philip for his vision, energy and determination in driving this forward, and to the Downpatrick community for stepping up and giving their time, skills and resources.
“Together, they have transformed a house into a home and created the foundations for a brighter future.โ
