Mason speaks up for SEN pupils at Education Committee session in Assembly
Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has raised serious concerns that Newry Mourne and Down is one of the areas with the greatest need for Special Educational Needs provision and support.
The South Down MLA said: “I am greatly concerned that Newry Mourne and Down is an area with the greatest need for SEN placements for September 2025. Other areas include Greater Belfast, as well as Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon.

“Over 100 vulnerable children and their families are still waiting for confirmation of a school place.
”It is clear that Special Educational Needs provision requires a new and caring approach with effective solutions.
“Sinn Féin have called on the Education Minister as well as the Education Authority to intervene, and to ensure that every child has a suitable placement, and that schools are properly resourced and supported to meet every child’s need.
“Sinn Féin will still continue to stand up and make the case for a system that delivers for all children, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive in a setting that supports them.”
