Newcastle RNLI Celebrates 200 Years Of Lifesaving

200 Years of Lifesaving with Newcastle RNLI Recognised at Civic Event

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, hosted a Civic Reception on Tuesday 27 May 2025 at the RNLI Station in Newcastle to mark its incredible milestone of 200 years of lifesaving service.

Speaking at the reception, Chairperson Councillor Byrne said: “I am honoured to host this event tonight to celebrate 200 years of unwavering commitment by Newcastle RNLI volunteers, past and present, who have dedicated themselves to saving lives at sea along the County Down coast.

“I am also delighted to welcome the lifeboat crew members and members of the community to honour their bravery and service and celebrate the heritage of this vital institution.

“This incredible milestone reflects not only the courage and selflessness of countless individuals who have served with the Newcastle RNLI but also the deep bond between the RNLI and the communities they protect.”

Newry Mourne and Down Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne, hosted a Civic Reception at Newcastle RNLI to mark their 200 Anniversary and presented them with an inscribed crystal bowl to celebrate the anniversary. He also thanked them for the remarkable work carried out by volunteers who in 2024 alone, the Newcastle boat launched 18 times – helping 26 people and saving three lives. Chairperson Councillor Byrne noted that as part of the year-long bicentenary celebrations, the Newcastle RNLI 200 Committee is calling on the public to share their stories, photographs and memorabilia related to the lifeboat station’s proud history.

He added: “I would encourage as many people as possible to contribute to the commemorations as these personal stories and historical items play an important role in marking the occasion.

“I sincerely hope that the RNLI in Newcastle will continue to thrive and serve the community for many years to come.”

To commemorate the historic occasion, the Chairperson presented an engraved crystal bowl to Newcastle RNLI on behalf of the Council, which in 2024 alone launched 18 times – helping 26 people and saving three lives.
