Hazzard calls for urgent action on Castlewellan Lake following growth of blue-green algae
Speaking after a visit to Castlewellan Lake this morning (Tuesday 13 5 25), Sinn Féin’s South Down MP Chris Hazzard said: “There are growing concerns about the presence of blue-green algae in Castlewellan Lake.
“This has once again disrupted the annual Mourne Sprint Triathlon. This is the second consecutive year that this popular event has faced serious challenges due to water quality issues.

“The health risks posed by blue-green algae are well-documented, posing dangers not only to swimmers but also to local wildlife and park users.
“The recurrence of this problem reflects a broader environmental issue that requires urgent attention, not just in Castlewellan but right across the North.
“I have been in direct contact with Newry Mourne and Down District Council to discuss immediate measures to protect public health, the environment, and the visitor experience at Castlewellan Forest Park.

“I have also written to the DAERA Minister, seeking clarity on what steps his Department and its agencies are taking to tackle this recurring issue.”
The South Down MP added: ” It’s crucial that the impact on the local community and tourism is mitigated. In the longer term, we need to see joined up action and investment in water quality management to prevent such occurrences in future.
“Castlewellan Lake is a vital natural resource and a cherished space for local people and visitors alike.
“We need urgent action to ensure it remains safe and accessible for all.”
