McMurray Welcomes Assembly Debate On Renewables

South Down MLA Andrew McMurray calls for offshore renewables development

South Down MLA Andrew McMurray (Alliance) has highlighted the potential benefits of offshore renewable investment for Kilkeel and the wider South Down economy in front of the NI Assembly debate on Monday 24th March.

Andrew McMurray spoke during an Assembly debate on the Green Energy Transition, on Monday and said: “The offshore sector could make a huge difference to our economy.

Andrew McMurray MLA says there is huge potential to provide green energy from developments in the Irish Sea.

“It could give a real boost to coastal communities in my constituency. Much of the work involved in offshore renewables will be centred around the smaller ports and harbours that host OMS bases and storage facilities.

“We already have a very healthy sector of small and medium-sized businesses in Kilkeel, which could latch onto offshore projects off the South Down coast.

“It would bring much needed economic growth and could be absolutely transformative for South Down. But this sector needs clear timelines and assurances that development will happen in the area – otherwise, businesses will move elsewhere.”

McMurray cited research published by RenewableNI, which estimates that 1.5GW of NI offshore projects, installed by 2032, could produce up to £2.4 billion Gross Value Added for NI companies.

Added to this it should produce employment up to the equivalent of 32,400 people working full-time for a whole year, many of which would be highly skilled, well-paid jobs.

He also pointed to a number of key barriers to renewables development, including flawed planning policy and a lack of infrastructure for storing and distributing green energy.
