Street lights in Annalong faulty for two weeks says Cllr Jill Truesdale which adds to anti-social behaviour
Alliance Mournes Councillor Jill Truesdale has expressed her concern over the length of time Annalong Main Street has been without electric for the 2nd time in as many weeks.
Over the course of last week street lights on the Main Street went out on Tuesday night from just after Kelly’s Brae as far up as the speed signs exiting Annalong on the Kilkeel side. All last week lights have been going on and off in batches with no sustained clear lights all the way along the main road indicated Cllr Truesdale.
The Councillor said: “Residents reporting through the NI Direct site were given a reference number and told the work was in progress from Tuesday of last week and given a date for reply of the 31st March.
” Annalong is experiencing a significant rise in anti-social behaviour therefore it is crucial the street lights are repaired as quickly as possible.
“Cars appear to be coming down to Marine Park and racing around in the usual doughnuts creating dangerous, conditions in what is usually a peaceful area.
“These selfish individuals need to realise this behaviour will not be tolerated.
“More and more residents are utterly fed up with the lack of thought and respectfulness for others out for walks with their dog or just enjoying the lighter nights.”
Cllr Truesdale added that in addition, the toilets at Marine Park have been repeatedly vandalised costing the ratepayer thousands of pounds.
“The PSNI are aware of this vandalism and are now conducting regular patrols in Marine Park, however, the issue of anti-social behaviour driving is wide ranging and requires a multi-agency approach.
“Council must work in coordination with the PSNI and the local community to literally ‘drive’ this distressing behaviour out of residential areas from Kilkeel, Annalong and Newcastle.
“The driving behaviour in the council-owned Donard Park Newcastle has been well documented. What we do not want to see is these individuals moving to places lsuch as Marine Park in Annalong and continuing this behaviour.
“So it is vital the street lighting is restored as quickly as possible.”
