Saintfield U17s Hold Ballymena To A 0-0 Draw

Saintfield U17s faced tough opposition from their rivals Ballymena at Grove Playing Fields

SBYFL Division 1,

Grove Playing Fields, Saturday 15 2 25,

Final Score: Ballymena United U17 0 0 Saintfield United U17.

Saintfield’s U17s traveled to Grove Playing Fields to face Ballymena United over the weekend and ended up with a useful draw.

The first half saw limited chances, with the initial opportunity arising from a Ryan free kick just beyond the halfway line. As the goalkeeper advanced to claim the ball, he spilled it, allowing the alert Camden to attempt a rebound.

However, the Ballymena keeper quickly recovered to make a crucial save. Another chance came when Harry latched onto a through ball inside the box. His near-post strike forced the keeper to intervene, palming it away into the side netting.

Matthew J was Man of the Match for Saintfield Utd U17s in their battle against Ballymena U17s.

Besides these opportunities, both defenses remained resolute, with Patrick having little to do beyond collecting overhit through balls. The back four comfortably handled corners and long throws into the box, leading to a halftime scoreline that kept the game finely balanced.

In the second half, Saintfield appeared more dangerous than in the first half, and indeed more so than Ballymena. Credit goes to Matthew J, Jackson, Ryan, and Matthew D, who provided a solid foundation for the attackers to seek a potential winner.

A nearly decisive moment occurred when Harry was played through on the right side, but the goalkeeper made a brilliant save as Harry closed in on goal. Saintfield continued to exploit runs behind the defense, with Ross finding himself in a promising position.

Unfortunately, his shot took a significant deflection, looping over the seemingly beaten keeper and clipping the top of the crossbar before going out for a goal kick.

This marked the final action of the match as the game ended 0-0.

Although Saintfield likely had the better chances, Ballymena would feel rightly aggrieved to concede a late goal, having enjoyed their fair share of possession and demonstrated valiant defending.

The Man of the Match award went to Matthew J, who impressively returned to the starting lineup after over two months out of action.

Playing with confidence, he expertly dealt with aerial threats and was a formidable presence on the ground and in the air. His methods, though sometimes unorthodox, were effective, and he ensured that the ball seldom passed him throughout the game.
