Soccer Round Up For Saturday 18th January 2024

An overview of some of the local amateur soccer matches across leagues and cup challenges

CUPS.

Clarence Cup Round 2

Castlewellan Town were at home entertaining Crumlin Utd and enjoyed a win in a tight game with goals from Connor Marron and Danny McKay to put them through to the next round with a 2-1 win.

Donaghadee gave Clonduff an 8-1 drubbing in a one-sided match.

Portaferry just managed to pull off a 2-3 win against Tullymore Swifts with goals from Morgfan Smyth,

Celtic Bhoys travelled to Groomsport and faced a stiff test as the matched ended up 1-1 and Celtic won on penalties. They are also doing very well in the Junior Shield having beaten Clonduff the previous week and they are topping their league. So as the season progresses, there is one through on their mind for next season” “Will it be or not 2B, that is the question.” They are unbeaten this season and are in really top form as a team.

Premier sides Drumaness Mills and Ards Rangers clashed at Meadowvale. The first half was a bit of a cautious affair but Drumaness showed strongly in into the second period. Goals were from Callum Dougan, Aidan Watson, Peter Brannigan and Declan Looney heading in with minutes to go.

Templeton Cup

Kilmore Swifts overpowered Antrim Rovers Reserves in a 6-0 win with goals from Shane Bright opening the scoring on 6 minutes with Morgan Smyth knocking in two, the last in the dying embers at 87 minutes to put them through to the next round.

Finaghy IIs took on Killyleagh IIs and produced a 4-1 win. Killyleagh have lost form of late.

Intermediate Cup

Kilmore Rec claimed a strong 0-2 win against Banbridge Town with goals from in 9 minutes from Ryhs Clarke and 25 minutes from Philip Doran which were enough to secure the win in this tough match which had a total of 7 yellow cards.

THE NAFL (League Matches).

Premier League.

Comber Rec dismantled Islandmagee with a 7-0 crushing. Goals from Dylan Wilson (2), Brandon Nelson (2), Matt Tumilson, Lex Walker and Brett Conville secures the league points for the day. Comber Rec are having another good season and they are still in cup competitions so there’s a lot of football left to play this season.

Dromara suffered a 0-3 loss against Derriaghy CC who are playing fairly wll at the moment.

Division 1B.

Newcastle FC secured vital points to try and stave off relegation at the end of the season by beating Malachians 5-0 who are not firing up this season and are trailing in the league.

Bangor Amateurs won 9-1 against Grove Utd in a one-sided match. Bangor were certainly up for the match and were 4 goals up by 14 minutes.

Portavogie Rangers suffered a 1-2 defeat on their home patch to a stronger Saintfield FC side. This was a good performance from Saintfield who are sitting next to Portavogie midtable in 1C.

Division 1C.

Ballynahinch Utd played Ballywalter Rec at Millbridge and enjoyed a 5-0 win keeping clear of the bottom of the league table against Ballywalter who could be looking into the jaws of relegation.

The Newcastle and District Amateur Football League

Premier Division.

Ardglass FC lashed with Downpatrick FC at The Meadow and could only managed to hold the visitors to a 1-1 draw with the home team scoring a goal by Jamie Cusack on 9 minutes and the equaliser from Downpatrick for Downpatrick coming in 44 minutes just before the half-time whistle.

Ballynagross lost out to a stringer Drumaness Mills Reserves losing 1-3 who are enjoying a bit of good form of late.

Division 1.

Killough IIs had a strong win over Ardglass IIs with a 7-0 victory at Mill Field making it a poor weekend at the office for the visitors.
