Long Says It’s Time To Apply For Firework Licences

Make sure you have a firework licence this Halloween

Last night I heard a number of fireworks going off in Ardglass and that reminded me it’s that time of year when we have to apply for firework licences.

Justice Minister Naomi Long is reminding the public that they need a fireworks licence if they are planning to use fireworks this Halloween.

Applications for Halloween must be received by the Department of Justice by 18 October 2024.

The Minister said: â€śIf you are planning to use fireworks this Halloween, you must comply with the law and apply for a fireworks licence.

Be safe with fireworks… and get a licence says Justice Minister Naomi Long.

“Most events pass off without incident, however, each year there are a number of casualties as a result of using fireworks incorrectly and I am asking for people to be responsible and follow the firework safety code to avoid firework related injuries.”

It is an offence to buy or be in possession of fireworks without a licence.

“In addition, fireworks bought from illegal sources may not be safe and may result in prosecution.

“Fireworks must be purchased from a retailer who has been registered by the Department of Justice. ”

Licence applications and a list of registered firework retailers are available from:

The Minister added: â€śPlease be mindful of the impact that fireworks can have on your neighbours and indeed on animals. Low-noise fireworks are available and making a simple change could help make Halloween more enjoyable for your neighbours and cause less distress to animals.”

Anyone who has information about the illegal sale and use of fireworks should contact the PSNI, on 101, or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
