Terence O’Neill captures Brian’s big day at Ardglass Golf Club
The sun shone, the wind blew and the rain even fell as the 207 determined golfers all eyed the captain’s prizes.
Brian Deeny’s Captains Day prize on Saturday 6th July got off to a brisk start with golfers heading out at 6.30am after captain Brian Deeny has raised the customary club flag at the clubhouse, the oldest clubhouse building in the world dating back to 1405.
But Terence O’Neill was soon to make history of the other players as he notched up a strong 42 points
The course was in immaculate condition with greens running fast and true and it was going to take a good round of golf to prevail. But Terence was on form.
Terence and runner-up David McMullan did just that with both recording a strong 42points. However, with 10pts in the last 3 holes Terence won with a better back nine and secured his first major prize at Ardglass.
Terence has 20 points in the front 9 and 22 in the back nine. But the 11th hole proved a tough one with a ‘ding’ on his ‘card’ but he recovered well with birdies on the 12th and 17th holes.
In third place was Tommy Fegan Jnr with a score of 41 points and Tommy will no doubt be regretting the double bogey on 16. However a round of 77 for the 12 handicapper was excellent scoring.
4th and 5th prizes went to Jackie Strain and Raymond Brown respectively on 40 points, only separated after a complicated count-back.
The 1st gross prize and best round of the day was from Jonny Feenan who was one over in the front nine and two down in the back 9 to runner-up Daniel Vaughan.
The Senior Cowdy Team Captain went round the tricky conditions in 69 blows, securing the Gross prize beating Daniel with a stronger back nine.
Mr Brian Deeny’s guest prizes were won by his son-in-law Ryan Murphy and Kevin Beattie.
Longest drive at 15th was won by Alex Simpson.
Nearest the pin at the Par 3s were Eugene Quinn, Cormac O’Toole, Jim Greene, Colm Magee and Timmy Russell with Paul Fitzsimons nearest the pin in 2 at the 18th.
Speaking at the prize awards, Terence O’Neill thanked Club Captain Brian Deeny for the great array of prizes for the winners, and congratulated the green staff for the course being in pristine condition and he also thanked the House and restaurant staff for providing excellent hospitality.
