The Inaugural Running Awards Event is being hosted in Newcastle
The People’s Running Awards will be taking place in a glamorous gala event in The Slieve Donard Hotel and Spa in Newcastle, County Down.
Sisters Clare McAvoy and Laura Brennan, both habitual runners, have created this exciting, new event for 2024.
There have been running and athletics awards events in the past but nothing like this the sisters said.
Their event , ‘The People’s Running Awards’, aims to celebrate the best in Northern Ireland’s running sector.
Clare said: “Our aim is to acknowledge the whole running community, from the elite to the everyday runner, from the volunteers to those who give up their time to ensure our events and training sessions take place.
“There is even a category for ‘Youth Runner’ which is very exciting as this is a very popular sport amongst young people in Northern Ireland!
“‘The People’s Running Awards’ is an event for everyone!”
Clare and Laura came up with the idea after a conversation about how much running helps those in the community both in terms of fitness and health and in mental health.
Laura said: “There are so many inspirational stories of people who have come through adversity and use running as an escape.
“There are also many people who fundraise by running 5K, 10K, half and full marathons as well as the ultra-runners and those with disabilities who complete running events by fundraising and showing strength, endurance, and resilience.
“Thousands of pounds are is raised for charity in our community, and we want to give people the platform to tell these amazing stories and celebrate those who truly deserve it.
“In saying this, your nomination doesn’t have to be for fundraising. You may wish to acknowledge someone who simply deserves to be recognised for their ability or inspirational efforts, or contribution to the sport, or even to health and wellbeing.
“We have 22 categories covering runners of all abilities, ages and experiences.”
