McGrath and Devlin press for re-boot of the Newcastle car boot sales
South Down SDLP MLA Colin McGrath and Mournes Councillor Laura Devlin have called for the return of Newcastle’s weekly car boot sales and have requested that Newry Mourne and Down District Council identify a suitable location for this.
Commenting, the South Down MLA has said: “The Saturday morning car boot sales in the paddock of Newcastle’s Donard Park were a terrific community focal point for many years.
“People could always be sure of getting a bargain, and enjoying a bit of banter with those selling or those buying.
“When the decision was made to transform the paddock into the new car park which we see here, questions were raised as to the future of the car boot sale and if it could continue.
“I believe that the Council did miss a trick in not continuing with the car boot sale, and is something which we think must be revisited.”
Colin McGrath added: “Fortunately, there are a number of open air spaces in Newcastle that would be appropriate for the car boot sale on a Saturday morning.
“Laura and I are raising these with Council at present to see if they can be considered and then hopefully delivered for the public. I look forward to updating the local Newcastle on the outcome of this.”
Councillor Laura Devlin said: “Quite recently we have seen greater numbers attending local car boot sales, and indeed charity shops.
“Some may put this down to the cost of living crisis, but in reality there is actually a greater number of young people who are exploring these avenues for clothing particularly.
“Our young people are more interested in sustainable fashion, or vintage clothing and the car boot sale is often a terrific outlet for these type of purchases.
“Now is the right time for our Council to revisit the Newcastle car boot sale.”
