Downpatrick FC enjoy league win over Ballynagross
The Newcastle and District Amateur Football League,
Premiere League Match,
Venue: Dunleath Park, Saturday 23rd March,
Downpatrick FC 4 0 Ballynagross FC.
Downpatrick entertained near neighbours Ballynagross in this league encounter played at Dunleath Park and went ahead on three minutes when a left wing corner fell to the feet of Con Farrell who made no mistake and volleyed home to make it 1-0 writes Cyril McKinney.
Ballynagross grew into the game and enjoyed some good possession but could not create a clear cut scoring chance.
Downpatrick were playing with a strong wind in the first half and on 44 minutes Downpatrick striker Dylan Kelly scored direct from a right wing corner by using the wind seeing the ball loop over keeper Ryan McCoubrey and ended up in the net to make it 2-0 at hal-time.
Into the second half and with both sides struggling with the bumpy pitch and good passing football was difficult but on 51 minutes a slide rule pass from Downpatrick left winger Carson split the Ballynagross defence.
It sent McAlister clear on the right flank and he then tapped a great ball across the six yard box to the back post where Montgomery was closing in to make it 3-0 to the home side.
To their credit Ballynagross players said ”let’s go for it” on the restart and went on the offensive and did pose a few tests for the Downpatrick defence but found Con Farrell and keeper Ruairi Murphy up to the task.
Then on 85 minutes Downpatrick won a corner on the right wing and from the kick the ball was was met by the head of McAlister hitting in to the back post to ensure Downpatrick took all 3 points.
Downpatrick were the dominant team on the day, but Ballynagross played with a good spirit against a stronger team.
