Alliance Representatives Welcome Environment Improvement Scheme for Rathfriland
Alliance representatives Patrick Brown MLA and Cllr Joy Ferguson have welcomed progress on the Environment Improvement Scheme (EIS) for Rathfriland.
The scheme is part of the Small Settlements Regeneration programme and is being led by Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council in partnership with three government departments.
Following a successful consultation exercise in September last year, the Department for Infrastructure (DFI) have now approved a number of public realm improvement works highlighted during this consultation.
Speaking about the scheme, Patrick Brown MLA said: ‘This is very positive news for Rathfriland, and something our Banbridge DEA councillor Joy Ferguson has been working closely with the local community and council to progress.
“I am particularly pleased that DFI have approved plans to retain existing Mourne granite kerbstones, which are an important hertiage trademark of the Rathfriland public realm.
“And I also welcome street lighting upgrades on Castle Street and footpath improvements on Downpatrick Street, Main Street and Dromore Street.”
Cllr Joy Ferguson added: The improvements will be a welcome enhancement to the public realms areas of Rathfriland.
“I am delighted that a number of proposals made by the local community during the consultation process have been taken on board by the Department for Infrastructure.
“There are a few aspects that still require clarity including confirmation of additional car park signage. I will continue to work with Council officials and DfI to lobby for progress on these issues. ’
