Quoile Walk Lighting Needed Says Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin seeking environmentally-friendly lighting for Quoile paths

Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP has called for “enhanced environmentally friendly lighting” to be installed along stretches of the Quoile river walk in Downpatrick to aid pedestrians. 

The South Down MP was speaking following representations made to him and to Downpatrick Councillor Philip Campbell from local walkers.

The walker said the popular walking route becomes inaccessible for many commuters due to poor lighting in the early mornings and evenings.

Mr Hazzard said: “The introduction of low-level, environmentally friendly lighting along parts of the Quoile river walk would greatly improve accessibility for many.

“It would certainly benefit women and older residents whilst still being complimentary to the natural environment at the Quoile. 

“The provision of this lighting would not only improve accessibility of those currently using the walking route, but would actively encourage others to utilise the local community asset. 

Cllr Campbell added: “I have begun discussions with Council officials now in order to explore how a community safety scheme like this could be delivered at the Quoile. 

“We can learn from other very successful lighting projects on schemes such as the nearby Comber Greenway.

“I am confident we can deliver something here in Downpatrick that can greatly improve the accessibility and experience for walkers at the Quoile.”
