DfI to assess traffic flow at Newcastle Harbour
Sinn Féin Newcastle Councillor Willie Clarke is pressing to have a one-way system introduced at Newcastle Harbour to improve safety.
Cllr Clarke said: “I welcome the response from DFI Roads in regards my request for an assessment to be carried out into the feasibility of introducing a one-way Roads system at Quay Street, Newcastle Harbour.
“With regards to the issue at Quay Street at Newcastle Harbour, DFI Roads will review the existing arrangements at these junctions with the Kilkeel Road and monitor the traffic movements at this location.
“It will be looked at from a traffic progression and road safety issue and considered along with other related traffic management schemes.”
Cllr Clarke added: “There is a major problem that has been caused by an increase in traffic at Quay Street, Newcastle Harbour, mainly for coastal recreation, two-way traffic movements are now becoming almost impossible to negotiate mainly due to the number of cars parked along the road.
“In my opinion the North exit from Quay Street is dangerous due to poor sightlines. The exit needs to come from the Southern junction.
“There will need to be works carried out to improve the turning area to accommodate cars leaving Quay Street onto the A2 Kilkeel Road by introducing a one-way system this will enable dedicated parking bays on one side of Quay Street.”
