Killyleagh To Celebrate Jubilee With Big Jubilee BBQ

Killyeagh To Mark Queen’s Jubilee With Big Street BBQ

Killyleagh Community Association (KCA) expects hundreds of people from across the Killyleagh and Shrigleyxa0 area to join the summer BBQ event, which has been funded by Newry Mourne and Down District Council and the European Unionโ€™s PEACE IV programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).xa0

On Sunday June 5 a number of large barbeques and dozens of tables and chairs will be set out in the centre of Killyleagh, in readiness for what KCA hopes will be one of the largest community events ever held in the village. It is anticipated that up to five hundred people could attend to help mark the Queenโ€™s Platinum Jubilee.

Pride in Killyleagh: the small town has over the past 20 years made a huge step in community relations putting on big events. Pictured is local artist Leo Casement with a painting of Killyleagh Castle in 2012 during the Chocolate Festival.

At the event, which will run from 12.00 to 5.00pm, local people will be able to bring their own food to cook on the barbeques, while enjoying music from several bands, singers and a DJ. Two bands are made up of pupils from Downpatrick schools, St Patrickโ€™s Grammar and Down High. One band โ€“ โ€˜The Thing Isโ€™ features this yearโ€™sxa0 BBC School Soloist, Eva Rowan, on vocals. There will also be street entertainers and face painting provided for children. A display of Celtic dance by leading Irish dance and Scottish Highland dance schools will take place in front of the castle.

The schoolsโ€™ music and Celtic dance performance elements of the event have been organised by the Sir Hans Sloane Centre, Killyleagh, with PEACE IV funding.

Pupils from the two local primary schools โ€“ Killyleagh Integrated and St. Maryโ€™s โ€“ along with senior citizens from the village Friendship Group, will be able to avail of a limited amount of free food during the first hour of the event. Other attendees can bring their own food or buy it on site from local suppliers.

Mr Gawn Rowan Hamilton, Lord Lieutenant for County Down, will attend the special event and cut a celebratory cake at approximately 1.30pm.

Janine Boyle, owner of the Dufferin Coaching Inn, in the village, and a member of the Killyleagh Community Association with a key role in organising the Big Jubilee BBQ Lunch said. โ€œWe are very excited about this event, which has been planned to bring the whole community together to enjoy food, music and dance in the centre of our historic village, while celebrating the Platinum Jubilee.โ€
