Fired Kitchen In Killough Supports Carers’ Programme

Adult Carers creative cookery project proves a culinary success with help from DEA forums and South Eastern HSC Trust

Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob District Electoral Areas forums have teamed up with the Carers Support Service for the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SEHSCT), to deliver creative cookery sessions for adult carers, hosted by Chef David Lee from the renowned Asian experience Fired Restaurant in Killough.

Carers look after people with a whole host of conditions who have had to shield throughout the pandemic. For this reason, adult carers were often cut off from others and had little opportunity to meet or even have a chat.

Conscious of the need for carers to be able to take a break from their responsibilities, relax and meet like-minded people, the DEAโ€™s and Carers South Eastern HSC Trust approached Chef David Lee to develop the creative cooking sessions. xa0xa0

During the sessionโ€™s, participants had the opportunity to learn new cooking skills and make tasty Chinese inspired foods.xa0At the conclusion of the project each participant was presented with an apron, recipe booklet and a basket steamer to continue to hone their cooking techniques.

Speaking at the presentation, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason said: โ€œMental Health is a topic that I feel very strongly about and appreciate the impact isolation and loneliness can have on individuals.

“This project provided an opportunity for adult carers to meet new people, develop new skills and have a welcome diversion from their responsibilities. I am delighted that the DEAโ€™s and South Eastern HSC Trust in association with the Fired Restaurant developed this much needed project.xa0

โ€œFrom speaking with participants today, they clearly enjoyed taking part, as they met new friends, reduced their stress levels and developed new culinary skills that they can continue to use at home.xa0

“Initiatives such as this are essential to reduce social/rural isolation and contribute to improving peopleโ€™s general health and wellbeing, and such initiatives are to be welcomed.โ€
